The Most Affordable Places to Live in Manhattan

Manhattan is a dream come true for so many people.  This area offers countless chances to climb the corporate ladder and make yourself into a financial success overnight: but how does anyone afford to live here?  The average home here is impossibly expensive, and the apartments and condos are blindingly pricy.

These are the most affordable places to live near Manhattan, and why this area is such a winner.

Inwood

If you’re a fan of the arts and don’t mind traffic, living in Inwood can be a lot of fun.  The apartments here are surprisingly affordable, rarely breaking $2,000 for a two-bedroom, and it’s also pretty close to the One Train that travels northward up to Dyckman Street.  This is the perfect area for any young professional that’s still learning the city.

Washington Heights

This neighborhood was recently made famous by the movie and musical In The Heights, which focuses on its high Hispanic population.  Thanks to this large population, it’s home to the Hispanic Society Museum and offers a lot of cultural significance.  You can access the A express, C express, and 1 train while living here.

Yorkville

Some of the most attractive and affordable Manhattan real estate is in Yorkville!  This affordable and near-silent neighborhood is the place to go if you want a little peace and quiet when you get off work.  Although most of the buildings here are high-rises and condos, there’s almost no nightlife, so you don’t have to stress about constant partying and noise.

Yorkville is easy to access through Second Avenue Q and the 4, 5, and 6 trains since it’s home to Park Avenue.

How to Make Your Dollars Stretch

Although there are only so many hours in a day that you can work before you hit pure exhaustion, it’s important to think about what you can do to stretch your dollar a little further.  One of the best ways to do that is to get roommates.  More people in NYC have roommates than in any other city in the country, making it possible to divide the cost of housing, so the load isn’t as heavy.

Another awesome way to save money is to seek out free or cheap entertainment and food.  Although many areas in Manhattan are impossibly expensive, there are also countless free or cheap things to do and see.  Get to know the city by safely exploring these options with friends.

Make sure to go for a job that has growth potential.  The turnover for most businesses in this city is horrifying, making people seem expendable and replaceable because of how many people want the job.  Thankfully, it does give you the perk of climbing the corporate ladder a little faster.  Look for work that offers upward mobility, and then work as hard as you can to get high on that ladder.

Manhattan is Stunningly Expensive!

Although Manhattan is incredibly expensive, it’s worth every cent.  This area of the city ensures that your dreams can come true and you can live the life you’ve always wanted: so why not chase that?
